Redmond and Ward-Prowse latest Saints stars to represent England
Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse represented the England senior side for the first time to add to the growing number of Saints players to pull on the famous Three Lions shirt.
Redmond 23, and Ward-Prowse 22, came off the bench in the 1-0 defeat against Germany in Dortmund on Wednesday.
In recent years Southampton have provided the nation with a whole host of internationals. The current England squad includes four from the club for only the second time in history with Redmond and Ward-Prowse joined by goalkeeper Fraser Forster and left-back Ryan Bertrand.
The only other time this happened was in October 2014 when Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert were all involved in a friendly game at Wembley against Denmark.
Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Nathaniel Clyne and Michael Antonio are among the other notable ex-Southampton players to have gone on to represent their country in recent years. And further back there was Wayne Bridge and James Beattie too.
Redmond replaced former Saints and current Liverpool midfielder Lallana just past the hour mark. Soon after, Poldoski’s thunderous left-foot strike arrowed into the top corner past the helpless Joe Hart for the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory for the hosts. It was a goal fitting of the occasion as Poldolski bowed out in style in his farewell appearance for the Germans.
Despite England losing 1-0, Southampton fans watched on with great pride as Ward-Prowse joined Redmond on the pitch for the closing stages as he replaced Jake Livermore of West Bromwich Albion.
In May 2016, Ward-Prowse captained the England under-21’s to their first Toulon Tournament victory since 1994, while Redmond was named the Vauxhall England Under-21 Player of the Year.
Stepping up from the Under-21 set-up to the senior England side has been well-deserved and is another indication of the progression of both players. For Southampton it is a further endorsement of the fine work the club is doing in developing talented international class players.
