Chelsea 4-2 Southampton

Southampton lost 4-2 at Stamford Bridge to Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Saints performed well in the first half and had got the game back to 1-1 when Oriol Romeu netted against his former side to cancel out Eden Hazard's opener. But the Saints went in at half time a goal down as Gary Cahill powered home a header just before the break.

Diego Costa then netted twice in the second half to put Antonio Conte's side well in the driving seat before Ryan Bertrand's header added a consolation goal for Southampton from Cedric's cross.

Claude Puel: "I think it was a good performance on the pitch, but without the good result, and without being clinical enough in both the boxes, offensively and defensively.

"We conceded goals at bad moments – five minutes into the first half, then the second right at the end, and the third just at the beginning of the second half.

"It's a shame, because the quality we showed and the opportunities we created, we produced a good game against a great team, but tonight I think the details made the difference – defending better on free-kicks, for example, and two great players like Diego Costa and Eden Hazard helped make the difference.

"It's a shame because it was better than against Manchester City. I was more satisfied with the level of our game."

Oriol Romeu: “I think we had some good periods within the game, which were mainly during the first half.

“I think a fair result would have been 1-1 at half time, but we didn’t defend the free-kick well enough and went in 2-1 down.

“Those goals are sometimes more important than scoring in another part of the game because it gives confidence to come back in the second half with a better spirit to play again.”

“It was hard to take the third and fourth goal. But we cannot say anything bad to the team. The spirit was good and the mentality was the right one.

“It’s hard and sad not to win against top teams, but we want to learn and end up winning these kind of games.”

Saints beaten at the Bridge

Southampton's bid to make it four away wins out of five in the Premier League fell short, as they were beaten 4-2 at leaders Chelsea. Despite causing their opponents plenty of problems, and controlling some decent portions of the game, Claude Puel's side could not prevent defeat against Antonio Conte's men, who took another big step towards winning the title.

Chelsea 4-2 Southampton

Chelsea restored their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a convincing win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge. Antonio Conte's side had seen their advantage cut by Tottenham after the Blues' loss at Manchester United - but this was an emphatic response to follow on from Saturday's FA Cup semi-final win against their London rivals.
