Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton

Southampton made seven changes to their lineup for their final away game of the season at Middlesbrough and triumphed 2-1 despite missing a penalty.

Jay Rodriguez turned home from Shane Long's cross to put the Saints 1-0 up at half time before Nathan Redmond doubled the lead after the break.

Long was then awarded a penalty when he was brought down by Boro keeper Brad Guzan, but his effort from the spot hit the crossbar.

The victory sees Claude Puel's side move up to ninth in the Premier League with two games to go.

Highlights:

Reaction:

Jay Rodriguez:

“We had a lot of change in the team today and I think that all of the lads that came in did really well, so it’s an important win.

“We have good lads in this team who get their heads down and work hard, and I think that really showed today.

“We found it hard at times to break Middlesbrough down, but it was a great ball from Longy into the box for me.

“It was a good time to score because I think it settled us down just in time to control the rest of the game.”

Claude Puel:

“It’s a good result.

“I think we can finish the game with the penalty and then after that it was a bit difficult because the other players perhaps believed it wasn’t finished.

“We lost, a bit of the concentration in our game so it was difficult with the long play that we faced after that.

“But it was important to take the three points for the squad because it is a good reward for all of the players.

“I am happy with the players that haven’t had a lot of game time over the last few weeks. Today allowed them to show their qualities and let them play in a serious game with good consideration and focus.

“This is very interesting for them and for the team. I was confident with all of these players because I have seen on the training ground the work they can do.”

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton

Southampton remain on course for a top-half Premier League finish as they held off a late fightback from a meek already relegated Middlesbrough. Jay Rodriguez put Saints in front at the end of a lifeless first half, losing Calum Chambers to turn in Shane Long's cross after a neat build-up.
