Saints were badly beaten at Wembley. A Harry Kane hat-trick and a goal each for Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son saw Spurs find the back of the net five times. Soufiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic replied for Southampton but it was far too little, too late. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “When we concede the third goal it was really difficult to come back. I think we reacted well in the second half, to try to score goals and be in the game. “Obviously our goals came late, but we pressed higher and tried to show what we are [capable of]. It was important to show some character in those moments. “Sometimes the difficult moments are useful for seeing how people will react. Our profession and our life in football is made from these moments, the difficult times help the team to be together and be stronger. Hopefully we can bounce back from this moment. “Against the top teams, you cannot make any mistakes, because they don't make too many. Some amazing players today, a lot of quality up fro

Charlie Austin scored his fifth goal in as many starts of the for Saints but Mauricio Pellegrino's side failed to win again as Laurent Depoitre netted a second half equaliser for Huddersfield. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: "We were really close to scoring the second goal, but then we conceded and we have to try to improve this type of goal. "Obviously we are disappointed because I think we had to win this game and now we are in the middle of the season, but still we have got a lot of possibility to bounce back from this situation and to change our results and convert this start into more points and more goals. "Football is efficiency. You need to score goals, and in this type of game you have to try to score the second earlier and we have had a couple of chances, but I would repeat that our accuracy wasn't the best. "It's a pity because I think we did in some moments react well. In some other moments it was a little bit flat because there w

A Marcos Alonso free-kick proved to be the difference at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea took all three points against Saints. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino:  “In some moments, we were strong. We defended with personality and we counter-attacked with spirit. Our idea was to be in the game until the end. “When we made the changes, we created a couple of chances and I think we were there. We were really close to a draw in this game. “I changed the position of Nathan at half-time a little bit and after we changed again with Sofiane and Charlie coming on because it was difficult to arrive in wide areas with their three defenders and two wing-backs. They move the ball with tempo. “They want to open the corridor in the middle. It wasn’t easy to defend the open play from them. “In general, we competed well and we were in the game until the end.” ---------- James Ward Prowse: “It was an important reaction to Wednesday night, which didn’t go the way we wanted it to go, but I think to a man we

A late goal from Olivier Giroud meant it finished 1-1 at St. Mary's. Charlie Austin scored his fourth goal in as many games for Saints. Reaction: Charlie Austin:  “It’s a massive sense of frustration. We started off like a house on fire, with four chances in the first seven minutes, but we needed to get the second goal. “I feel like I’m going to get chance after chance, so I’m putting myself in the right positions and luckily I’ve put the ball in the net. "I should’ve scored the one when I went across Cech. As a kid growing up I was always told to go across goal, but he’s made a good save. “I was delighted with the goal, but it was just instinct really. It got us a great start, but it’s one of them where we should’ve got the three points. “We’ve got one and in hindsight, if we’d drawn against Man City we’d be [four games] unbeaten. “We’ll go again – we’ve got big games coming up and a quick turnaround with Leicester at home, so hopefully we can give a goo

Southampton fell to a 1-0 defeat as Sam Vokes scored the only goal of the game for visitors Burnley. Saints have now drawn a blank in front of goal at St Mary's in nine of their last l2 Premier League games. Mauricio Pellegrino's reaction: “It’s a really painful game because I think we were much better than them in all different aspects of the game – defensively, on set plays and with the ball. “We had a number of possibilities to convert chances, but that was the only aspect in which they were better than us – they were clinical in converting the chance that they had. “This is part of football. We have to live with this and learn for the future. “It’s part of our job and our life. Sometimes you can be better than the opponent but still lose, like today.” Southampton 0-1 Burnley

Sofiane Boufal was the match winner for Saints as he scored a wonder goal six minutes from time to help see off West Brom at St Mary's. Mauricio Pellegrino: “In the Premier League, to make this difference is not easy. “I’m really happy because I think we deserved to win. “We created chances and controlled the opponent until the second half when they changed to five defenders with two strikers. “In that moment we struggled. Our reaction at the end changed the game, but I thought we deserved the goal a little bit earlier. “We put them under pressure from the beginning, we played well and we created chances.” ---------- Sofiane Boufal: “When I went past one or two players I felt confident, and the rest of it just felt natural. “I’m so happy with this goal – for my family and all the people who have helped me in the difficult moments. “It’s football. Sometimes you have good moments and sometimes you have bad moments, but the most important thing is to be confident in

Rickie Lambert announces retirement

Image
Saints legend Rickie Lambert has announced his retirement from professional football. The 35-year-old striker has been without a club since leaving Cardiff in July this year. Lambert scored 117 goals in 235 appearances for Southampton helping the club achieve back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League. He went on to become an England international and netted on his debut against Scotland before spells with Liverpool and West Brom. Lambert's statement: "I feel lucky to have been involved in this sport for as long as I have. "I have had some ups and downs in my career but to have represented clubs like Southampton, Liverpool and playing for my country in a World Cup were beyond my wildest dreams. "Playing and scoring for England is probably my proudest professional moment and I will look back at every aspect of how I got there with fond memories. "I would like to thank the fans of all the clubs I played for but especially Southam

A goal from Steven Davis on his 200th appearance for Southampton was enough to earn three points at Selhurst Park. Davis netted early in the game after just six minutes to ensure Roy Hodgson's first game in charge ended in misery to make it five straight Premier League defeats for Crystal Palace. It was Saints' first away win of the season. Defender Virgil van Dijk returned to action for Mauricio Pellegrino's side coming on as a late substitute. Southampton 0-2 Watford

Image
A disappointing afternoon for Saints saw Watford run out 2-0 winners at St. Mary's. Abdoulaye Doucouré put the visitors ahead with a low drive seven minutes before the break. Substitute Daryl Janmaat then doubled the lead to confirm victory in the second half. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino:  “I think they were better than us in the first half to the second balls. “In every single challenge they were there a little bit before us, and from this point they created trouble for us. “But not too much because we conceded two soft goals from long range. That is something we need to learn and improve from today. “We improved in the second half and looked to create better opportunities, but not enough to find a way back into the match. “We know that the players will be away and have to travel and this is the reason why I changed three players from the last game. “I felt a little bit of low energy in some players but it is not an excuse. We have to take responsibi

Southampton had to settle for a goalless draw at Huddersfield but maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League. Mauricio Pellegrino's post-match reaction:  "It was a really tough game from the beginning and I think we were fighting, we were there. "We had some problems on second balls and in some deliveries, but I think little by little we were getting better, especially when we controlled the ball. "At the beginning we had a couple of situations and, at the end, we were much better – we had three or four opportunities to score and to win the game – but typical British football, it was really tough. "Huddersfield are now with a really high mentality. We were fighting until the end. The character of the team was good and we've got another point, another clean sheet, but we have to keep going. To win games, you have to do something more – a little bit more." Match tweets: The teams are in! Here's the #SaintsFC side for this afternoo

New deal for Yoshida

Image
Maya Yoshida has signed a new three-year contract with Southampton. The defender has played 138 games for Saints over five seasons since he arrived at the club in 2012. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “We are extremely pleased to have reached a new agreement with Maya, who is a vital part of our squad, not only on the pitch, but off it. “Maya is a player who has taken great strides in his game during his time with us, and his influence was felt particularly last season, as he formed outstanding partnerships with both Virgil van Dijk and Jack Stephens, helping the team reach the EFL Cup final. “Maya is an excellent example for any young professional to follow and it was important to ensure that we extended our commitment with him. “We are excited about the depth we now possess at the centre-back position for the years ahead, with Maya’s new deal strengthening our excellent group even further for the coming seasons.” Maya Yoshida commented: "There was no rea

Hoedt signs for Saints

Image
Southampton have announced the signing of Dutch international centre-back Wesley Hoedt, from Lazio. The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract at St Mary’s. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “Wesley is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and represents a significant addition to our squad. Having procured a Champions League finalist from one Italian club we have now added an Italian Supercoppa winner from another. “We believe he has all the qualities to play a big part in our future, and we have worked hard to bring him to Southampton, with a number of other high-profile clubs interested in him. "Finding a top quality central defender is difficult in the current environment and now we have six internationals in this position, both young and experienced. "Finding a naturally left-footed player is even more difficult. We have been tracking central defenders on our target list for the past 12 months and Wesley has always been at the top of tha

Southampton 3-2 West Ham

A Charlie Austin penalty helped Southampton secure their first win of the season in a five-goal thriller at St. Mary's. Saints took the lead through Manolo Gabbiadini who finished well when combining with Nathan Redmond. West Ham were then reduced to ten men when Marko Arnautovic was sent off just after the half-hour mark. Saints capitalised to double their advantage when Steven Davis was brought down in the area. Dusan Tadic stepped up to score from the penalty spot. Chicharito pulled a goal back for the visitors just before the break. After the break, Chicharito showed his poaching goalscoring instincts again to draw the game level for the Hammers to make it 2-2. Saints kept going despite letting a two-goal lead slip and eventually got their rewards with a late penalty winner from Charlie Austin. Gao family invest in Saints

Image
A letter to the fans of Southampton Football Club from Katharina Liebherr... I am pleased to confirm that talks to bring in a new partner to our club have been concluded. Following extensive and fruitful work, we are entering into a partnership with the Gao family and I am excited about what we will achieve together. Today is the start of a new and exciting chapter for our club. Mr Jisheng Gao and his daughter, Mrs Nelly Gao, with whom I have built a close relationship, share our values and ambitions. As a team, we will strive to build upon the strong foundation that is in place towards sustainable long-term success. Mr Gao, Nelly and I have full trust in Ralph Krueger and his management team. We wholeheartedly support their plans to follow the Southampton Way in the years ahead. But for now it is business as usual at Southampton Football Club and we must allow everyone at the club to focus on the first few weeks of the new season. I would like to thank the passionate sup

Southampton 0-0 Swansea

Southampton were held to a goalless draw as they began the new Premier League season at home to Swansea. Saints had plenty of opportunities throughout in Mauricio Pellegrino's first game in charge but couldn't find a way to break the Swans down. Reaction:  Mauricio Pelligrino - "I'm a little bit disappointed, because we did everything to win the game. We couldn't, because football is like this – sometimes with a couple of chances you can score, but today we couldn't. "As a manager, you can work on the way to create chances, on the way to control the game, but to have the courage to score goals is something that is difficult. I think we had 29 shots and just two on target. "It's something that we have to continue working on, and keep going, but in parallel I am really happy with the performance. As a first game I think the level of the team was really high. "Two or three players have been with us for only two or three weeks maximum
