Saints sign Vestergaard

Southampton have completed the signing of 25-year-old Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a four-year deal. Vestergaard is the club's fourth signing of the summer after deals for Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Angus Gunn have already been struck. Mark Hughes said: “We have had to fight off a lot of competition to bring Jannik here, and we are delighted he has chosen Southampton as the right place to take the next step in his career. “Although we were aware of the level of interest in Jannik, he made it clear very quickly that the quality of the club and the ambitions we have here meant this was his number-one option. “He represents another excellent addition to our squad this summer and brings with him an extensive amount of experience for his age. That means he can not only help us in the present but that he has the potential to develop his game even more with us, which is what we want as a club and is clearly exciting for b

Gunn signs for Saints

Southampton have announced the signing of highly-rated England Under-21 international goalkeeper Angus Gunn who joins from Manchester City. Gunn, 22, has signed a five-year contract with Saints. Southampton manager Mark Hughes said: “Angus is a player who clearly possesses a tremendous amount of potential, but his performances for Norwich and for the England Under-21 team also demonstrate the capabilities he already has right now. “We believe he has all the credentials to become a full international goalkeeper for England in the future, and that’s exactly the sort of talent we want to have here at Southampton. “He represents another excellent addition, and we are excited about what he brings to the squad and the further progression we feel he can make with us. “There was a lot of interest from other teams in the Premier League, so for Angus to choose Southampton as the best option for him is another positive indication of the work the club is doing and what is being buil

Southampton sign Elyounoussi

Southampton have completed the signing of Mohamed Elyounoussi from FC Basel. The 23-year-old forward Norway international has signed a five-year deal with Saints. Southampton manager Mark Hughes said: “Mohamed is clearly another very exciting addition to our attacking options. “He has got an outstanding record of goals and assists in two different countries, and we have been extremely impressed by the intelligence he has shown in his play from a tactical point of view. “He’s still at a young age as well, so we’re confident he can continue to improve and fulfil even more of his potential with us, and, following on from the arrival of Stuart Armstrong this week, we feel we have made real progress in adding a new dimension to our attack ahead of the season.” Mohamed Elyounoussi said: “I’m really happy to be here and I am really excited to get started. “The club has been following me for a long time, watching many games, so I feel really confident to come here and to get even b

McCarthy signs new deal

Image
Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has signed a new four-year contract after an impressive 2017/2018 season that saw the 28-year-old win the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season awards. McCarthy said: “I’m massively pleased. I had one year left on my current deal and obviously I’m over the moon to sign a new four-year deal. “I think the club is going in the right direction. We had a frustrating season last season but that’s in the past now and with the way we finished the season, we can take that into this one and hopefully finish a lot higher up the table. “I had a frustrating start with my injury but to come into the team and see out the rest of the season and help the team was massive for me. “You have to wait your time and then when I got my chance, I knew I had to perform week in, week out. “I train hard every day so I knew I wasn’t being put in when I wasn’t ready. I look forward to more game time next season.” Saints boss Mark Hughes commented: “Alex played a

Armstrong signs for Saints

Image
Southampton have completed the signing of 26-year-old midfielder Stuart Armstrong from Celtic on a four-year deal. Upon signing the Scotland international, Saints boss Mark Hughes said: “Stuart is a player who we have admired for some time, and I am delighted we have been able to bring him here, especially given the competition we faced to sign him. “We have strong players in the squad and it is important we build on that by adding different qualities. It is important we add a greater goal threat to the team as a whole, and to our midfield specifically, and Stuart’s record of scoring and creating makes him an extremely exciting addition in that area. “He brings with him extensive experience of European football and has developed his game impressively over the past few seasons at a major club in Celtic, where there is a demand not only to perform but also to win. Stuart has done both during his time there. “Our research tells us he is an excellent young man, intelligent,

Assistant First Team Manager Mark Bowen and First Team Coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also signed long-term contracts." Hughes said: “Mark, Eddie and I are thrilled to have signed long-term contracts with the club. It was the only option we considered, having spent the last eight weeks with the club. “Now it is vital that we take the unbelievable support we received from the fans during the last few games into next season.

Two goals from Dušan Tadić saw Southampton pick up a vital three points against Bournemouth at St Mary's. Reaction from Tadic: “It’s a little bit of a relief. We are very happy because we showed great character when it was most difficult. “Finally we have got three points and I need to say thank you to everyone. How our fans supported us, the players and the coaches – we were strong together. “It’s tough to be strong together in difficult moments but finally we got the benefits of that. “It was great. You always remember these kinds of moments because they gave us extra energy, they pushed us. “We also gave them something to make the atmosphere warm and we stayed together. “You can feel how important this win was for the club and everyone at Southampton.” "The new coach gave us extra power and experience and finally we gave him something back. We need to be at our best when it is the most difficult." Dusan Tadic with @AdamBlackmore 👇 #SaintsFC pic.twitt

Arsenal 3-2 Southampton

Image
Southampton put in a spirited performance at the Emirates scoring twice through Shane Long and Charlie Austin. Saints came away empty-handed though as Arsenal narrowly edged the five-goal thriller 3-2. Mark Hughes: "Apart from the key moments which led to goals, I thought our performance was good. "Once we were behind, we had to show a lot of character and I was pleased by what I saw. I wanted to see that kind of performance and that was the main thing for me. It was encouraging, that contrast in what we produced at West Ham and what we did today. “I felt we needed to be solid after conceding too early in the last two games and we were for the most part. We were resolute and when we did break we attacked with good effect, showing a good understanding of what we had worked on during the week. “We broke with good effect behind Longy, creating some good chances and scoring one of them in the first half. I think we were good value at 1-0 even if Arsenal had a lot of possession,

FA Cup: Wigan 0-2 Southampton

Image
Southampton beat Wigan by two goals to nil in Mark Hughes' first game as manager to see the Saints into the semi-final of the FA Cup. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Cédric both scored their first goals for the club, whilst Manolo Gabbiadini had a penalty well-saved. Saints will face Chelsea in the last four at Wembley. Reaction: Mark Hughes: “I was delighted, I have to say. It was a difficult fixture for us against a Wigan side whose manager and staff deserve huge credit for the way they set up and their philosophy of how they want to play. “This year they’ve gone up against other top Premier League clubs and overcome them, so we were the next in line, apparently, but we weren’t prepared to play that game. “We had to match their intensity and endeavour – that’s what lower league teams will always have in abundance. “If you don’t match that, sometimes you can come unstuck, but as a consequence of matching their endeavour, we were able to show the level of quality we

Saints appoint Mark Hughes

Image
Southampton have appointed Mark Hughes as manager until the end of the season. The 54-year-old has taken charge of almost 450 Premier League games having managed Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and most recently Stoke City. The new Saints boss said: “It's a challenge I'm excited by. It's a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I've got real affinity with, and I couldn't turn that down. "I bring experience of the Premier League. I understand what it takes in this league to win games. But first and foremost I think it's about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message from myself and the staff, that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done in this key period of the season. "The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we're a Premier League club next year. That's where this club needs to be, that's whe

Pellegrino sacked

Image
Southampton have sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino with the club just one point and one place above the relegation zone. Saints have just one win from their past 17 games and have eight games remaining to try to stay up. Club statement in full: Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has parted company with First Team Manager Mauricio Pellegrino. Assistant Manager Carlos Compagnucci and Assistant First Team Coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club.  We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future.  The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway. ----- Reaction: Former Southampton defender Francis Benali on BBC Radio 5 live: "It is something that has been bubbling away and has been talked about by Southampton fans for a while.  &q

Southampton 0-0 Stoke

Image
Southampton were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Stoke at St. Marys. Josh Sims made his first start of the season for Saints. Reaction: Josh Sims: “Mixed emotions really, for me personally I'm happy to be back in the starting XI. It's a real shame we couldn't get the result. “Everyone will agree that first half we weren't good enough, the tempo wasn't there and we were sloppy. But it was completely different in the second half, we were pressing high and were faster on and off the ball. “We created a lot of opportunities, and it's a shame we didn't do that from the start. We've got another game coming up [against Newcastle] that we're going to have to correct things. “We should have scored, considering the amount of opportunities we had, so we have to take that into the next game and change that feeling of disappointment into positives.” ----- Mauricio Pellegrino: “Obviously we are disappointed because in the second half we d

Burnley 1-1 Southampton

Image
Manolo Gabbiadini came off the bench to score a 90th minute equaliser to rescue a point for Saints at Burnley in a 1-1 draw. Reaction:  Alex McCarthy: “Obviously coming away to Burnley we knew it was going to be a tough game, but to get the point in the end is massive. “We haven’t had a lot of luck this season, but getting that bit of luck has obviously resulted in a goal for us. “It wasn’t going to be a pretty game, but the boys stuck together and we got the point in the end. “We’ve got great character in this group and a great squad with great players. “The boys still think we could’ve done better out there – we know we can – but there are a lot of positives we can take into Stoke next week.” Mauricio Pellegrino: "I think in the way that we equalised we can be happy because it was really difficult, after conceding against this side who don't concede too much themselves. "But, obviously, we have to analyse well, because we have to improve in different aspects – ho

FA Cup: West Brom 1-2 Southampton

Image
Saints progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Cup thanks to a 2-1 win over West Brom. Dutch defender Wesley Hoedt scored his first goal for the club before Dusan Tadic doubled the lead. Salomon Rondon netted for the hosts. Reaction: Dusan Tadic: “We are very happy because we showed great character to fight against a physical and strong team, especially in the second-half. “It was very important to get an early goal. I think from the start we had a control on the game. “In the second-half it was a little bit difficult because they played direct and you need to defend against that. We showed we can do that. "It was a nice finish but I am more pleased with our teamwork today. Nathan played a nice ball to Guido who found me and that’s the most important thing. “We will have these kind of teams in the rest of the season. Next game we have Burnley who are also physical and we need to compete against them. It’s a lot about confidence and I think we are going in the right dire

West Brom 2-3 Southampton

Image
Saints secured a much-needed three points to get out of the relegation zone. Mario Lemina scored his first goal for the club before Jack Stephens headed in his third goal in consecutive games. James Ward-Prowse also netted a fine free kick. Reaction: James Ward-Prowse: "We knew it was going to be tough here, but it's an important three points. "No matter how we won the game, it's just important that we dug in deep. Ok, we've not been playing the best of football, but we dug in together and got the vital three points. "There's a bit of competition for the free-kicks, but it shows how passionate we all are. "There's a good feeling around the team and all the lads want to do well to help the team. Thankfully for me, I was able to do that today, but Sofiane played brilliantly and did his part as well." ----- Jack Stephens: "I was disappointed with West Brom's opening goal – he was my man – so it's nice to make up for it."

Southampton 1-1 Brighton

Image
Jack Stephens scored his second goal in as many games but Saints remain in the bottom three after a 1-1 draw with Brighton. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “I think in the first 15 minutes they were a little bit better in direct play. “They won some second balls and from this situation we conceded a penalty. “After the goal, we totally controlled the game, but we couldn’t play quick enough to break through their defenders. “Little by little they would drop and for us, it was really difficult to find the space to create more chances. “We were patient and well organised because I don’t remember many actions from them, so in defence we controlled them well most of the time. “In this situation, every single victory is massive, but we have to keep pushing and on Saturday we have another opportunity.” ----- Steven Davis: “It’s so important to start quickly at home and get on the front foot but we didn’t do that tonight. “We were a goal behind early on and Brighton were difficult to break

FA Cup: Southampton 1-0 Watford

Jack Stephens celebrated his 24th birthday with his first goal for the club to help Saints into the next round of the FA Cup. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “We are really pleased with many aspects. One of them is that we had the opportunity to progress to the next round, and we did it. “On the other hand, we are also growing as a team and we are improving – this is the feeling of the group. “In the next week we have some important games, and I think it is the best moment for us to approach those games. For those reasons, we are happy.” ----- Jack Stephens: “It was the perfect day for me and great of course to get on the scoresheet but the most important thing is the result for the team and for the club. “We wanted to progress in this competition and we got the result that we needed. We’ve had the experience from the League Cup last year; if we could replicate that this time around in the FA Cup, it would be unbelievable. “It was a similar game to the one at their place a couple of we

Saints sign Carrillo

Image
Southampton have completed the signing of 26-year-old Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo from AS Monaco. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “A huge amount of work has gone in to completing this transfer, and we are thrilled that we have now been able to push it through to completion. “Guido represents a very exciting addition to our attacking options ahead of the final months of the season, possessing plenty of experience at the highest level, while also having the potential and the desire to improve even further. “We are confident he will benefit us not only in the remainder of this campaign, but in the years to come.” Guido Carrillo said: "I’m very happy. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club. “Lots of things attracted me. I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world. “I obviously know the coaching staff, I’ve worked with them in Argentina and I also spoke wi

Southampton 1-1 Tottenham

Image
Saints shared a point apiece with Spurs at St. Mary's. Davison Sanchez's own goal opened the scoring after good work by Ryan Bertrand before Harry Kane hit back with an immediate reply. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “We have to be pleased with the way we competed. “We showed the right attitude and I think we are on the right path, even though looking at the table we know we are in a difficult moment. “In three or four weeks’ time, everything can change. “We have to use this attitude to grow and to believe, because confidence and belief in ourselves is the best drug for our dressing room right now. “I think we were a little bit lucky in some aspects, but unlucky with our chances too. “We took some risks and we were in the game until the end; we could win and we could lose, but that’s part of football.” Southampton 1-1 Tottenham

Watford 2-2 Southampton

Image
Southampton drew 2-2 at Watford despite leading 0-2 at half time. James Ward-Prowse netted twice for Saints and has now scored 3 in 2 games. Watford pulled one back through Andre Gray before a controversial late equaliser from Abdoulaye Doucouré. Reaction: James Ward-Prowse: “At first it didn’t look like handball. From my position it’s hard to see his right arm but having seen it again in the changing room it’s clear. “It’s frustrating because having dug in deep late on in the game and a refereeing decision cost us, that’s disappointing. “There’s been a lot of talk about the VAR system this week and whether that is something that can help eradicate those sort of things we’ll have to wait and see. “We can’t change that now. We started the game very well and the second-half didn’t match the first that we had. “We should have put the game to bed. The second-half has not been great for us lately, it’s been a bit of a trend and we have to put that right very quickly. “We h

FA Cup: Fulham 0-1 Southampton

Image
James Ward-Prowse scored the only goal of the game to help Saints into the next round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Fulham. Reaction: Jan Bednarek: "The most important part was just to reach the next round and give 100%. We haven’t won for a while and played poorly last time out so it was important to be one team and play together. The fans helped us very well.  "We have to go step by step and stick together to reach our goals. The result was the most important thing here, more so than how we did it. We struggled in some moments of the game but we deserved to win. "I was calm because I have been working hard for this opportunity. I was patient and showed to the coach that I was ready. I did my job, kept a clean sheet so I’m happy. "To be honest, it was my first game in professional football as a right-back. My team-mates helped me through it very well and overall we defended well." ---------- Mauricio Pellegrino: “It was important because we needed a per
