Virgil van Dijk training alone

Image
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has said that defender Virgil van Dijk will train alone and has asked to leave. "He is not involved with the team because psychologically he is not 100%," said the Saints boss. "When I was talking with him, the boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. "I need to work with a player that works at 100% to defend Southampton. "This is the decision. I had to say: 'OK, if you don't want to be involved because you don't feel OK, you have to train alone until this period of time. "We need the player, but 100% - this is the question. "I hope that Virgil can review his feelings, because you know that today players are big business - not just the player but behind him there is a lot of interest. "I want to help the squad, I want to help Virgil but we need a player, I repeat, involved in every training session, involved not just with the body but with the mind on th

Les Reed said: “We are extremely pleased to have strengthened our commitment with Fraser, who has been an integral part of our team over the past three seasons. “He has already established himself as one of the leading keepers in the Premier League and, at 29, we believe he still has his best years ahead of him, not just for us but also the national team. “This is the ideal place for him to continue his progress, under the guidance of our Head of Goalkeeping, Dave Watson, and we are delighted that Fraser continues to see his long-term future at Southampton.” Fraser Forster said: “I’m delighted. I have absolutely loved my time here at Southampton so far and when the opportunity came along to extend it I didn’t think twice about it. “I think it’s a fantastic club to be at, with a really bright future, and the ambition shown at t

Rodriguez signs for West Brom

Image
Jay Rodriguez has signed for West Bromwich Albion after five years at St Mary's. Jay scored 35 goals in 126 appearances for Saints since joining in 2012 from Burnley. His most prolific season came in the 2013/2014 season where he netted 15 Premier League goals working under manager Mauricio Pochettino. He earned his first senior England call-up that season and netted five goals in just four matches during March 2014. Rodriguez looked set to be heading to the World Cup as a reward for his fine form that season, only for a cruel injury to rule him out of action for the next eleven months. Jay scored five goals for Southampton in 2016/2017 including a stunning goal against Bournemouth. The new West Brom signing took to Twitter to thank Southampton for his time at the club. Jay said: "I just wanted to say a massive thank you to the Southampton fans and all that are involved at the club. "My five years have been full of highs and lows but one thing that I will

Les Reed said of the signing: “Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential. “We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development. “This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position. “Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.” Jan Bed

Stephens signs new 5-year deal

Image
23-year-old defender Jack Stephens has signed a new five-year deal with Southampton after a breakthrough 2016/17 campaign. Last season Stephens took on a prominent role in the first team following an injury to Virgil van Dijk. Jack went on to form a strong partnership in the heart of the Saints defence alongside Maya Yoshida. Les Reed said: “Our philosophy at Southampton is to turn potential into excellence, and Jack is somebody who very much embodies this. “His progression, and the level of his performances, was one of the real highlights of last season, and we have been delighted with his development ever since he joined the club. “We are extremely pleased to have strengthened our commitment with him, and we believe Jack can continue to improve here and play an important role in our first-team plans moving forward.” Jack Stephens said: “I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay. “It feels like home to me. I have really enjoyed my time here and I'm now looking forwar

Pellegrino really happy to be at Saints

Image
Mauricio Pellegrino has been speaking as manager of Southampton for the first time. Here are a few quotes from the new Saints boss: "The first thing I would like to stress is that I am really happy to be here. It is a pleasure for me. “I would like to make the most of this opportunity. I am really pleased about how people have received me, how Les [Reed], Ross [Wilson], Ralph [Krueger] and everybody was really kind with me from the beginning. “When I hear the desire about the future of the club and the goals they express for the club for the next season and in the next few years, we were completely agreeing and I quickly felt for me it would be a great opportunity. “I am really happy to be in the Premier League, to be in Southampton. I think we can create a great mood to bond the players and the people that are working in this amazing training ground and I have got confidence to do my best for this team. “I am really happy – this is my first feeling. "I am lo

Gallagher signs new deal

Sam Gallagher has signed a new four-year deal with Southampton. Les Reed:  “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability. “We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses. “We are all looking forward to seeing Sam back here for pre-season and helping him take the next strides in his game at Southampton.” Sam Gallagher: “I am absolutely delighted to sign this new contract. Especially to get it all done and dusted before the start of the season because I can really get my head down and focus now on the year ahead. “It shows the belief that the club have in me and I need to prove that now, which is what I am hoping to do in pre-se
