Southampton 1-1 Brighton

Jack Stephens scored his second goal in as many games but Saints remain in the bottom three after a 1-1 draw with Brighton. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “I think in the first 15 minutes they were a little bit better in direct play. “They won some second balls and from this situation we conceded a penalty. “After the goal, we totally controlled the game, but we couldn’t play quick enough to break through their defenders. “Little by little they would drop and for us, it was really difficult to find the space to create more chances. “We were patient and well organised because I don’t remember many actions from them, so in defence we controlled them well most of the time. “In this situation, every single victory is massive, but we have to keep pushing and on Saturday we have another opportunity.” ----- Steven Davis: “It’s so important to start quickly at home and get on the front foot but we didn’t do that tonight. “We were a goal behind early on and Brighton were difficult to break

Jack Stephens celebrated his 24th birthday with his first goal for the club to help Saints into the next round of the FA Cup. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “We are really pleased with many aspects. One of them is that we had the opportunity to progress to the next round, and we did it. “On the other hand, we are also growing as a team and we are improving – this is the feeling of the group. “In the next week we have some important games, and I think it is the best moment for us to approach those games. For those reasons, we are happy.” ----- Jack Stephens: “It was the perfect day for me and great of course to get on the scoresheet but the most important thing is the result for the team and for the club. “We wanted to progress in this competition and we got the result that we needed. We’ve had the experience from the League Cup last year; if we could replicate that this time around in the FA Cup, it would be unbelievable. “It was a similar game to the one at their place a couple of we

Saints sign Carrillo

Southampton have completed the signing of 26-year-old Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo from AS Monaco. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “A huge amount of work has gone in to completing this transfer, and we are thrilled that we have now been able to push it through to completion. “Guido represents a very exciting addition to our attacking options ahead of the final months of the season, possessing plenty of experience at the highest level, while also having the potential and the desire to improve even further. “We are confident he will benefit us not only in the remainder of this campaign, but in the years to come.” Guido Carrillo said: "I’m very happy. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club. “Lots of things attracted me. I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world. “I obviously know the coaching staff, I’ve worked with them in Argentina and I also spoke wi

Saints shared a point apiece with Spurs at St. Mary's. Davison Sanchez's own goal opened the scoring after good work by Ryan Bertrand before Harry Kane hit back with an immediate reply. Reaction: Mauricio Pellegrino: “We have to be pleased with the way we competed. “We showed the right attitude and I think we are on the right path, even though looking at the table we know we are in a difficult moment. “In three or four weeks’ time, everything can change. “We have to use this attitude to grow and to believe, because confidence and belief in ourselves is the best drug for our dressing room right now. “I think we were a little bit lucky in some aspects, but unlucky with our chances too. “We took some risks and we were in the game until the end; we could win and we could lose, but that’s part of football.” Southampton 1-1 Tottenham

Watford 2-2 Southampton

Image
Southampton drew 2-2 at Watford despite leading 0-2 at half time. James Ward-Prowse netted twice for Saints and has now scored 3 in 2 games. Watford pulled one back through Andre Gray before a controversial late equaliser from Abdoulaye Doucouré. Reaction: James Ward-Prowse: “At first it didn’t look like handball. From my position it’s hard to see his right arm but having seen it again in the changing room it’s clear. “It’s frustrating because having dug in deep late on in the game and a refereeing decision cost us, that’s disappointing. “There’s been a lot of talk about the VAR system this week and whether that is something that can help eradicate those sort of things we’ll have to wait and see. “We can’t change that now. We started the game very well and the second-half didn’t match the first that we had. “We should have put the game to bed. The second-half has not been great for us lately, it’s been a bit of a trend and we have to put that right very quickly. “We h

FA Cup: Fulham 0-1 Southampton

James Ward-Prowse scored the only goal of the game to help Saints into the next round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Fulham. Reaction: Jan Bednarek: "The most important part was just to reach the next round and give 100%. We haven’t won for a while and played poorly last time out so it was important to be one team and play together. The fans helped us very well.  "We have to go step by step and stick together to reach our goals. The result was the most important thing here, more so than how we did it. We struggled in some moments of the game but we deserved to win. "I was calm because I have been working hard for this opportunity. I was patient and showed to the coach that I was ready. I did my job, kept a clean sheet so I’m happy. "To be honest, it was my first game in professional football as a right-back. My team-mates helped me through it very well and overall we defended well." ---------- Mauricio Pellegrino: “It was important because we needed a per
