Southampton have completed the signing of 25-year-old Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a four-year deal. Vestergaard is the club's fourth signing of the summer after deals for Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Angus Gunn have already been struck. Mark Hughes said: “We have had to fight off a lot of competition to bring Jannik here, and we are delighted he has chosen Southampton as the right place to take the next step in his career. “Although we were aware of the level of interest in Jannik, he made it clear very quickly that the quality of the club and the ambitions we have here meant this was his number-one option. “He represents another excellent addition to our squad this summer and brings with him an extensive amount of experience for his age. Southampton have announced the signing of highly-rated England Under-21 international goalkeeper Angus Gunn who joins from Manchester City. Gunn, 22, has signed a five-year contract with Saints. Southampton have completed the signing of Mohamed Elyounoussi from FC Basel. The 23-year-old forward Norway international has signed a five-year deal with Saints. McCarthy signs new deal

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has signed a new four-year contract after an impressive 2017/2018 season that saw the 28-year-old win the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season awards. McCarthy said: “I’m massively pleased. I had one year left on my current deal and obviously I’m over the moon to sign a new four-year deal. “I think the club is going in the right direction. We had a frustrating season last season but that’s in the past now and with the way we finished the season, we can take that into this one and hopefully finish a lot higher up the table. “I had a frustrating start with my injury but to come into the team and see out the rest of the season and help the team was massive for me. “You have to wait your time and then when I got my chance, I knew I had to perform week in, week out. “I train hard every day so I knew I wasn’t being put in when I wasn’t ready. Southampton have completed the signing of 26-year-old midfielder Stuart Armstrong from Celtic on a four-year deal. Upon signing the Scotland international, Saints boss Mark Hughes said: “Stuart is a player who we have admired for some time, and I am delighted we have been able to bring him here, especially given the competition we faced to sign him. “We have strong players in the squad and it is important we build on that by adding different qualities.
