Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton

Image
Southampton had to settle for a goalless draw at Huddersfield but maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League. Mauricio Pellegrino's post-match reaction:  "It was a really tough game from the beginning and I think we were fighting, we were there. "We had some problems on second balls and in some deliveries, but I think little by little we were getting better, especially when we controlled the ball. "At the beginning we had a couple of situations and, at the end, we were much better – we had three or four opportunities to score and to win the game – but typical British football, it was really tough. "Huddersfield are now with a really high mentality. We were fighting until the end. The character of the team was good and we've got another point, another clean sheet, but we have to keep going. To win games, you have to do something more – a little bit more." Match tweets: The teams are in! Here's the #SaintsFC side for this afternoo

New deal for Yoshida

Image
Maya Yoshida has signed a new three-year contract with Southampton. The defender has played 138 games for Saints over five seasons since he arrived at the club in 2012. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “We are extremely pleased to have reached a new agreement with Maya, who is a vital part of our squad, not only on the pitch, but off it. “Maya is a player who has taken great strides in his game during his time with us, and his influence was felt particularly last season, as he formed outstanding partnerships with both Virgil van Dijk and Jack Stephens, helping the team reach the EFL Cup final. “Maya is an excellent example for any young professional to follow and it was important to ensure that we extended our commitment with him. “We are excited about the depth we now possess at the centre-back position for the years ahead, with Maya’s new deal strengthening our excellent group even further for the coming seasons.” Maya Yoshida commented: "There was no rea

Hoedt signs for Saints

Southampton have announced the signing of Dutch international centre-back Wesley Hoedt, from Lazio. The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract at St Mary’s. Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “Wesley is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and represents a significant addition to our squad. Having procured a Champions League finalist from one Italian club we have now added an Italian Supercoppa winner from another. “We believe he has all the qualities to play a big part in our future, and we have worked hard to bring him to Southampton, with a number of other high-profile clubs interested in him. "Finding a top quality central defender is difficult in the current environment and now we have six internationals in this position, both young and experienced. "Finding a naturally left-footed player is even more difficult. We have been tracking central defenders on our target list for the past 12 months and Wesley has always been at the top of tha

Southampton 3-2 West Ham

A Charlie Austin penalty helped Southampton secure their first win of the season in a five-goal thriller at St. Mary's. Saints took the lead through Manolo Gabbiadini who finished well when combining with Nathan Redmond. West Ham were then reduced to ten men when Marko Arnautovic was sent off just after the half-hour mark. Saints capitalised to double their advantage when Steven Davis was brought down in the area. Dusan Tadic stepped up to score from the penalty spot. Chicharito pulled a goal back for the visitors just before the break. After the break, Chicharito showed his poaching goalscoring instincts again to draw the game level for the Hammers to make it 2-2. Saints kept going despite letting a two-goal lead slip and eventually got their rewards with a late penalty winner from Charlie Austin. Gao family invest in Saints

Image
A letter to the fans of Southampton Football Club from Katharina Liebherr... I am pleased to confirm that talks to bring in a new partner to our club have been concluded. Following extensive and fruitful work, we are entering into a partnership with the Gao family and I am excited about what we will achieve together. Today is the start of a new and exciting chapter for our club. Mr Jisheng Gao and his daughter, Mrs Nelly Gao, with whom I have built a close relationship, share our values and ambitions. As a team, we will strive to build upon the strong foundation that is in place towards sustainable long-term success. Mr Gao, Nelly and I have full trust in Ralph Krueger and his management team. We wholeheartedly support their plans to follow the Southampton Way in the years ahead. But for now it is business as usual at Southampton Football Club and we must allow everyone at the club to focus on the first few weeks of the new season. I would like to thank the passionate sup

Southampton 0-0 Swansea

Southampton were held to a goalless draw as they began the new Premier League season at home to Swansea. Saints had plenty of opportunities throughout in Mauricio Pellegrino's first game in charge but couldn't find a way to break the Swans down. Reaction:  Mauricio Pelligrino - "I'm a little bit disappointed, because we did everything to win the game. We couldn't, because football is like this – sometimes with a couple of chances you can score, but today we couldn't. "As a manager, you can work on the way to create chances, on the way to control the game, but to have the courage to score goals is something that is difficult. I think we had 29 shots and just two on target. "It's something that we have to continue working on, and keep going, but in parallel I am really happy with the performance. As a first game I think the level of the team was really high. "Two or three players have been with us for only two or three weeks maximum

Mario Lemina signs for Saints

Image
Southampton have announced the signing of midfielder 23-year-old midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus on a five-year contract. Les Reed (Saints' Vice Chairman) said: “Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football. “Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club, and this is a purchase that has set another club-record fee. “Mario still has his best years ahead of him, and we believe that he will not only be an excellent acquisition for us in the immediate future, but that he will also be able to realise even more of his potential here in the years to come. “In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way. This is a player who has won trophies a

Virgil van Dijk hands in transfer request

Image
Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request.  The 26-year-old Netherlands international said: "I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist. "I have been left frustrated by the club's position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed. "I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. "I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances. "As a proud professional, I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events. "I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I

Targett signs new deal

Image
Matt Targett has signed a new five-year deal with Southampton. The 21-year-old left back is a Saints Academy graduate and has been with the club since the age of eight. "It’s a great way to kick-off the season," said Targett. "I am really happy to sign. I’ve been at the club since I was eight so to extend my time here is only a good thing. "Physically I feel good. I think I feel the best I’ve ever felt. I think the injury has only helped me improve physically and mentally. "I have come back from it all and got my fitness back – I am feeling fitter and stronger so it’s all positive at the moment." “I missed a lot of games last season. Hopefully now I can stay injury free and get out on that pitch. Hopefully I can play in the left-back spot and play as many games as possible. “Behind the scenes I have done a lot of work with Kev the physio and Bill Styles the fitness coach. They both work really well together and they have made me come
